Just found out about that sad news earlier today... Colan was a HUGE fixture in Marvel's Silver Age(which is where I know of him from), having had a long Daredevil run, as well as a brief Avengers run, a lengthy Tomb of Dracula run(where he co-created Blade!), and a Captain America run(where he co-created a favorite of mine, Falcon). After doing some research, I see Colan also did a good amount of DC work in the 80's, mainly on the Bat-titles(some of which I just purchased recently). I know I'll be digging out many of my comics that Colan worked on and give them another read.

I'd never heard of him, but considering he co-created two African-American characters he definitely gets some respect from me.

Yeah, JT. If I'm not mistaken(and who knows, I might be), Falcon was the first mainstream black American character(Black Panther was first, but he's African). I know he came before John Stewart, and after a quick search, it looks like I'm right. Plus he was one of the first black heroes to NOT have the word "black" as a part of his name.
Colan did some pretty good work in his day, I'm pretty sure Lisha knows of his work(as our resident artistic genius), and if not, you know google would have plenty of images.

Wow, that's pretty wild about him being the first black character to not have black in his name. I'm sure he could've been Black Falcon and no one would've thought twice. Thanks for the info X.

I have seen some of his comic work back when I was really looking into artists trying to get to know some good artists. His work is AMAZING! Sad to see another talented artist leave the comic world. But I know he's going to always be remembered. R.I.P

I knew you'd know about Colan, Lisha. Since I recognized the name, I figured you would as well... He'll def be missed, but like you said, always remembered.

Lol. I thought we'd get away with it on posts about artists thinking he'd go away, but damn, he found us! lol.

Colan was one of my favorite artists, and it's been sad seeing his health and living situation in general decline so much in recent years. A friend of mine met him at a con a few years ago, and he was stunned to see this brilliant artist sitting at his table and drawing, alone. While people were lining up for hours to get sketches from artists who are more active today (but far less skilled, obviously), one of the best living comic book artists was completely ignored, but still doing what he loved most. I've always thought that story alone was evidence enough of how dedicated Colan was to his craft. He will be missed.
